Quick Summary of the Effects of Video Games

Good article from LiveScience that summarizes the effects of video games on youth. My summary of the summary:

  1. Yes — there is such a thing as too much gaming.
  2. As with pretty much everything in life, certain people are more vulnerable to video game addiction than others. Although we know of the risk factors, by no means to we have a complete picture.
  3. Video games do have a tendency to cause young people to react more immediately to tense/bullying situations with violent/reactionary behaviors, as opposed to just walking away.

While it’s an overstatement to claim video games are bad for youth, this article and the accompanying research do support the idea that moderation is the key — as it is with pretty much anything.

Internet and Health

A new way to think about how the internet impacts teen health by Red Orbit:

“Teens that text, drink too much caffeine, play games and surf the internet all night are experiencing difficulty staying alert and functioning the next day.”

Although caffeine seems to be the real culprit here, it is interesting to see how the internet not only impacts relationships, school work, and everything else we can think of it also alters/challenges our ways of dealing with time!

Slimming; get drunk on super absorbency**

Safe for Down There
fingers (clean & short nails)

vibrators*
dildos*
cucumbers*
electric toothbrushes*

Not Safe for Down There
Sharpie markers
safety pins
a French baguette
hamsters
vodka soaked tampons

You may have just read that second list and laughed, but that last non-safe for down there isn’t as ridiculous as it seems. Thanks to a few personal blogs that I read, I learned about a new fad; slimming. From what I can surmise (thank you YouTube), slimming is the vaginal or anal insertion of a vodka-soaked tampon in order to get drunk. ShamelesslySassy‘s blog post first caught my eye, and then I read about Slacker-Moms-R-Uspersonal experience learning of this new trend on a school field trip.

I am not surprised that teens are looking for new ways to hide drinking from their parents. This has been happening for generations. I am, however, surprised to think that teens are willing to endure the burning that a vodka-infused tampon must elicit. I’m highly interested in learning more about the actual physical dangers that putting a tampon soaked in vodka can have on a woman’s vagina/vaginal opening and/or the anus. It can’t be good.

Parents, if you notice that your daughter is suddenly going through more tampons than normal, or that your son is very willing to hang out in the feminine product aisle, you might want to start asking some pretty personal questions.
